Mobile Apps

How to design a mobile app that works with poor network

Decide which tasks must work without a connection, and always show the user whether their work has reached the office yet.

Choose what must work offline

List the jobs people must finish even with no signal, such as recording a visit or capturing a signature, and the information they need for them. Store only that data on the phone.

Show what has been sent

Users should always see whether an entry is saved on the phone, waiting to sync or received by the office. Nobody should assume the team can see something that has not been sent yet.

Plan for two people editing the same thing

Some changes can be merged automatically. Others, such as two different quantities for the same order, need a person to decide which one is right.

Test the bad days

Switch off the network mid-task, restart the app and retry a sync several times. Saved work must survive, and syncing must never create duplicates.
